Some objects carry their history quietly, and some carry it in a way that changes how you look at them entirely. The Curta calculator is small enough to fit in a closed fist, a cylinder of machined metal a little larger than a peppermill, with a crank on top and rows of tiny sliders down the side. Turn the crank and it adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides, all through pure mechanical gearing, no battery, no electricity, nothing but precisely cut metal parts turning against each other. It's an elegant piece of engineering on its own terms. It's also a device whose core design was worked out inside a Nazi concentration camp, by a prisoner who had every reason to expect he would never live to build it.
An engineer with a family trade
Curt Herzstark was born in Vienna and grew up around calculating machines; his father ran a company that manufactured mechanical calculators, and Curt worked in the business himself before the war, already experimenting with ideas for a calculator small enough to carry in a pocket rather than bolted to a desk. That ambition, a compact, fully mechanical, hand-operated calculator capable of all four basic operations, was itself unusual for the era, when comparable machines tended to be large, heavy, hand-cranked boxes meant to sit in an office. Herzstark had sketched out much of the mechanical logic before the war intervened.
The war intervened decisively. Herzstark, who had Jewish heritage on his father's side, was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 and deported to Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany, where he was held as a prisoner for the remainder of the war under conditions designed to break down and ultimately kill the people held there.
A design worked out in the mind, not on paper
What happened next is one of the more remarkable, well-documented episodes in the history of engineering. Inside the camp, Herzstark was assigned to work in a factory workshop area, and according to his own later accounts, camp officials who learned of his background as a calculator engineer allowed him to continue refining his calculator design on paper during this period, apparently with the notion that a working prototype might eventually be presented as a gift for German leadership. Whatever the intentions of the people who allowed it, Herzstark used the time to work out the mechanism in far more complete detail than he'd managed before the war, essentially designing the internal workings of the machine, cog by cog, while imprisoned and facing the constant threat of death. This should be stated plainly and without embellishment: he refined the core mechanical design of what would become the Curta while a prisoner at Buchenwald, under the same brutal camp conditions endured by everyone held there.
Buchenwald was liberated by Allied forces in 1945, and Herzstark survived.
From camp notebook to production line
After the war, Herzstark carried the design forward, eventually connecting with backers who could get it manufactured. Production ultimately settled in Liechtenstein, where the Curta went into commercial manufacture starting in the late 1940s, built by a company that continued producing the device for roughly two decades. Its shape, a rounded cylinder you could grip in one hand and crank with the other, quickly earned it a nickname that stuck: the "pepper grinder," or "pepper mill," for its unmistakable resemblance to one.
Despite being entirely mechanical, the Curta was capable of genuinely fast, accurate calculation for its size, and it found real, practical users, not just novelty buyers. It became particularly beloved in motorsport, where rally navigators used Curtas to calculate speed, time, and distance figures on the move, inside a moving car, without needing electricity or a stable desk. Engineers, surveyors, and scientists in the field also carried them for the same reason a mechanical device without batteries appealed to anyone working somewhere power wasn't guaranteed.
Obsolescence, then reverence
The Curta's run as a serious working tool ended the way most mechanical calculators' did: electronic pocket calculators arrived in the early 1970s, cheaper to produce, faster to use, and not reliant on precision-machined gear trains that took real skill to assemble. Production of the Curta wound down during that decade, and the device shifted from practical tool to historical curiosity almost overnight.
What it left behind, though, is a devoted following among mechanical calculator collectors and engineers who admire it as an object, not just a tool, prized for the sheer density and cleverness of its internal mechanism, packed into a housing barely larger than a fist. Opening one up reveals a stack of concentric drums, sliders, and stepped gears fitted together with almost no wasted space, the kind of internal layout that engineers still point to as an example of getting an enormous amount of mechanical function into a genuinely small volume, long before miniaturization became an electronic problem instead of a mechanical one.
Collectors today seek out well-preserved units, some of which still turn up in working condition after seventy-odd years, and its story, wherever it gets told, almost never leaves out the fact that its designer worked much of it out in his head, and later on paper, inside a concentration camp, holding onto a piece of precise, hopeful engineering in a place built to erase exactly that kind of future. Herzstark himself lived to see the calculator that bore the marks of that period become a genuinely successful product, manufactured for two decades and used by professionals who had no idea where its earliest, most difficult development had actually taken place.
