Most objects we consider "simple" got that way the hard way, and few illustrate this better than the zipper, a device so unremarkable now that you probably haven't thought about how it works since you were a child learning to dress yourself, but one that took the better part of a century of failed attempts, awkward branding, and one very patient engineer to become something you could trust with your pants.

A "clasp locker" that mostly failed

The zipper's earliest ancestor arrived in the 1890s, courtesy of an American inventor named Whitcomb Judson, who patented a "clasp locker," a hook-and-eye fastening device meant to replace the tedious business of buttoning up boots. Judson's device worked, in the sense that it existed and could be demonstrated, but it did not work well. It was fussy to manufacture, prone to popping open or jamming at inconvenient moments, and expensive relative to the buttons and laces it was trying to replace. Judson showed it off at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and while it drew curiosity, it never caught on as a practical product. Part of the problem was mechanical: the hooks had a tendency to spring open under ordinary strain, and there was no reliable way to guarantee a smooth, secure closure every time, which made the device more of a novelty than something a shoemaker or tailor could confidently build a product around. Judson and his backers formed a company to manufacture and sell the clasp locker commercially, but sales stayed modest, and for roughly two decades afterward, the fastener existed mostly as a good idea with an unreliable execution, the fastener equivalent of an interesting rough draft.

Sundback fixes the actual problem

The breakthrough came from Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-American engineer who worked for the company that had grown out of Judson's original patents. Between roughly 1913 and 1917, Sundback redesigned the fastener almost from scratch, increasing the number of fastening elements per inch and, crucially, changing their shape into interlocking teeth that meshed together far more reliably than the old hook-and-eye clasps. His version used two rows of identical teeth, each shaped so a single sliding piece could mesh them together or pull them apart in one continuous motion. This is essentially the modern zipper, teeth and slider both, and it's the design, with refinements in materials and manufacturing, that still fastens jackets and jeans today. Sundback also engineered the machinery that could mass-produce the teeth cheaply and to consistent tolerances, which mattered just as much as the design itself: a fastener nobody can afford, or that fails on the factory floor, doesn't get anywhere.

Selling a thing nobody knew they needed

Even with a genuinely reliable design in hand, the new fastener took years to find its footing commercially, because there was no obvious market clamoring for it. Early adoption showed up in unglamorous places: work boots, money belts, and tobacco pouches, where a secure, quick-closing seal mattered more than fashion. The turning point in both function and branding came in the 1920s, when the B.F. Goodrich Company used the fastener on a line of rubber galoshes and, according to company lore, coined the name "zipper" itself, supposedly inspired by the brisk, satisfying sound the slider made closing the boot. The name stuck far better than any of its more technical predecessors, which is why a device with no obvious connection to boots is now universally called by a name born on a rubber galosh.

Clothing designers were slower to embrace it. For years, the zipper carried a faint whiff of utility gear, fine for boots and tobacco pouches, not yet dignified enough for a dress. That changed gradually through the 1930s, as designers began featuring zippers in men's trousers and, notably, children's clothing, where a fastener a child could operate without adult help had obvious appeal. By the mid-twentieth century, the zipper had shed its workwear-only reputation entirely and become a completely ordinary feature of everyday clothing and luggage, its novelty forgotten so thoroughly that most people never wonder how odd it would have looked to someone in 1900. Improvements in metal stamping and, later, molded plastic and nylon coil teeth made zippers cheaper and more consistent to produce at enormous scale, which helped push the fastener into virtually every category of manufactured goods, from tents and sleeping bags to handbags and upholstery, well beyond the boots and pouches where it first found a footing.

How the slider actually pulls it off

The elegance of a zipper is easiest to appreciate once you understand what the slider is actually doing. Each side has a row of identical teeth, offset slightly so they can nest together like two combs pushed toward each other tooth by tooth. The slider is a small Y-shaped channel that straddles both rows: pulled in one direction, its internal geometry funnels the teeth from each side together and presses them into alignment, meshing them tooth by tooth into a single interlocked seam strong enough to resist being pulled apart sideways, even though it separates instantly when pulled from the top. Pulled the other way, the same channel does the reverse, wedging between the meshed teeth and peeling them apart one pair at a time. It's a simple piece of shaped metal or plastic doing all the actual work, guided along a track it can't leave, which is why a well-made zipper can be opened and closed thousands of times without wearing out, right up until a single misaligned tooth reminds you it was never actually magic, just very good geometry.
