From an airplane window over the empty quarter of Mauritania, the desert suddenly does something it is not supposed to do: it draws a perfect bullseye. Concentric rings of rock, roughly twenty-five miles across, sit exposed in the sand with a symmetry so precise that it looks engineered. It is not. It is one of the more genuinely puzzling landforms geologists have spent decades arguing over, and it is called the Richat Structure — or, more evocatively, the Eye of the Sahara.

A landmark discovered from orbit, not on foot

The Richat Structure sat in the Sahara for its entire geological existence without a name that most of the world would recognize, largely because almost nobody who was not already deep in the Mauritanian desert had any reason to walk across it. Its true fame arrived only once humans started looking down from above. Early aerial photography and then orbital imagery revealed a formation so cleanly circular and so enormous that astronauts on early crewed spaceflights reportedly used it as a visual landmark, one of a small number of Earth features distinctive enough to pick out from orbit without instruments. That is a strange kind of celebrity for a landform: better known from space than from the ground, since standing inside the structure at eye level, its scale is far too large to visually register as a bullseye at all — you would need to travel dozens of miles just to cross from one ring to another.

From "impact crater" to "eroded dome"

The Richat Structure's dramatic circularity made an asteroid or comet impact an obvious early guess, and for a period many geologists treated it as a plausible impact crater candidate, the kind of scarring a large object might leave after slamming into the desert floor. Later and more detailed geological study shifted the consensus away from that idea. The rock layers exposed at Richat do not show the intense shock deformation, melted rock, and other telltale evidence that a genuine impact crater leaves behind. Instead, the structure is now generally understood by geologists as a symmetrical dome of sedimentary rock — layers that were pushed upward from below over an extremely long stretch of geological time, likely tied to deeper igneous activity beneath the surface, without ever fully erupting through the surface as a volcano.

Once that dome had been slowly lifted, ordinary weathering and erosion took over. Different rock layers within the dome resist erosion at different rates — harder layers wear down more slowly than softer ones — and over an immense span of time that differential erosion carved the dome into the distinct concentric rings visible today, much the way erosion can expose the layered structure of a hillside anywhere else, just arranged here in a strikingly circular pattern because of the dome's original symmetry. It is worth being honest that some finer details of Richat's exact formation history remain actively studied and debated among geologists; the current dome-and-erosion explanation is the best-supported account, not a single settled fact carved in stone on day one.

That shift in scientific opinion, from impact crater to eroded dome, is itself a useful window into how geology actually works. Field teams have examined the exposed rock at Richat directly, sampling and mapping the different layers, and the absence of the shocked quartz, melted glassy rock, and other unmistakable impact signatures that mark confirmed craters elsewhere in the world was a major factor in moving the consensus toward the dome explanation. Science writers and outlets covering the structure have had to revise older, confident "impact crater" framing more than once as the geological picture sharpened, which is exactly the kind of course correction that responsible reporting on an unusual landform should be willing to make.

A structure best appreciated from above

Because of its sheer scale and its remote desert setting, the Richat Structure is not the kind of place most travelers stumble across on a road trip. There is no dramatic canyon wall or single vantage point from which a visitor can take in the whole bullseye at once; the rings are wide, gently stepped terraces of exposed rock rather than towering cliffs, and appreciating the full geometric pattern really does require an aerial or satellite view. Photographs and satellite imagery have effectively become the structure's primary medium — most people who could describe the Eye of the Sahara in detail have only ever seen it from a screen, not from the ground, and that is unlikely to change given how logistically difficult reaching the interior of the Mauritanian Sahara can be.

That same visibility from altitude gave the structure a second, more practical life: it has served as a navigation landmark for high-altitude and space travel precisely because its size and circular regularity make it recognizable at a glance from far above, in a stretch of desert that otherwise offers few visually distinctive features across hundreds of miles.

A reminder that scale can hide in plain sight

The Eye of the Sahara is a useful lesson in how differently a landscape can read depending on your vantage point. Walk across it and you would likely perceive nothing more than gradually undulating desert terrain, rock outcrops here and there, without ever suspecting you were crossing the rings of one of the most recognizable geological formations on the planet. Only from far enough away does the pattern resolve into a bullseye — a reminder that some of the most striking things on Earth are simply too large for a single human vantage point to take in.
