There are longer distances you can travel on Earth without leaving solid ground, but there is no longer single continuous railway line than the Trans-Siberian, which runs roughly 9,289 kilometers — about 5,772 miles — from Moscow in the west to Vladivostok on the Pacific coast in the east. A passenger boarding the full route crosses eight time zones, passes through more than 80 cities, and if traveling the classic nonstop schedule, spends about a week aboard the train.
An empire that needed to reach its own edges
The idea for the railway emerged in the late nineteenth century out of a straightforward strategic problem: Russia's Far East territories, all the way to the Pacific, were nominally part of the empire but functionally almost unreachable. Overland travel from Moscow to Vladivostok could take months by horse and cart or river barge, following routes that were often impassable for parts of the year. Without a fast way to move troops, settlers, and goods, Russia's hold on its eastern territories was militarily and economically thin.
Construction began in 1891, authorized under Tsar Alexander III, with his son, the future Tsar Nicholas II, presiding over the ceremonial start of construction in Vladivostok — a detail the regime made sure was well publicized, framing the railway as a signature achievement of the dynasty. Building proceeded from multiple starting points simultaneously, crews working east from European Russia and west from the Pacific coast, to be joined somewhere across the vast middle of Siberia.
Permafrost, forests, and a lake that wouldn't cooperate
The engineering obstacles were severe and mostly came down to geography that had never been built across at this scale before. Much of the route crosses permafrost — ground that stays frozen year-round beneath a thin surface layer that thaws each summer — which behaves unpredictably under the weight of rail lines and required specialized construction techniques to prevent the thawing and refreezing cycle from buckling the track. Dense taiga forest had to be cleared by hand across thousands of miles, and rivers, including several of the largest in the world, needed bridges before trains could cross them.
The single hardest stretch was the shoreline of Lake Baikal, the world's deepest freshwater lake, where steep cliffs along the southern shore made a direct route nearly impossible with the technology of the time. For years, the railway simply stopped at one side of the lake, and in winter, trains — and, in an almost absurd stopgap measure during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905, entire train cars — were hauled directly across the frozen lake surface on temporary rails laid over the ice, a solution that worked but was obviously not permanent. A proper rail line around Baikal's southern shore, cut through more than 200 tunnels and rock cuttings, known as the Circum-Baikal Railway, was finally completed in 1905, closing the last major gap.

The full route, including a later realignment that moved the eastern section fully onto Russian territory rather than routing through Chinese Manchuria as an earlier version had, was substantially complete by 1916 — roughly 25 years after construction began, a project that spanned three tsars' worth of Russian history and, along the way, a revolution's worth of political upheaval still to come. It remains, more than a century later, an active and heavily used railway, carrying both passengers and a significant share of Russia's east-west freight traffic, including a substantial amount of trade moving between Europe and Asia over land rather than by sea.
What a week on the train actually looks like
For travelers who ride it end to end rather than treating it as freight infrastructure, the Trans-Siberian is less a single experience than a slow unspooling of enormously different landscapes: the birch forests and farmland close to Moscow, the flat expanse of the West Siberian Plain, the taiga thickening as the route moves east, the dramatic curve around Lake Baikal's cliffs, and finally the approach to Vladivostok, a Pacific port city closer to Tokyo and Seoul than to Moscow. Most travelers break the journey into segments, stopping in cities like Yekaterinburg, Irkutsk, or Ulan-Ude rather than riding the full week nonstop, in part because the train timetable is calculated on Moscow time for the entire route regardless of which of the eight time zones a station physically sits in — a detail that keeps the railway's own internal logic consistent even as the sun outside the window rises and sets on a completely different schedule than the clocks inside.
It is, in the truest sense, infrastructure built at the scale of a country that spans eleven time zones total — a single line of steel rail asserting, mile after frozen mile, that the empire, and later the nation, that built it was in fact one connected place.
The railway's construction workforce itself is worth pausing on, since the scale of labor involved was genuinely staggering for the era: tens of thousands of workers, including a significant number of convict laborers and, in parts of the eastern sections, Chinese and Korean laborers working under often difficult conditions, cleared forest, blasted rock, and laid track across thousands of miles of largely unpopulated territory with comparatively primitive equipment by modern standards. Entire new towns sprang up essentially from nothing along the route simply because the railway needed maintenance depots, water stations, and crew housing at regular intervals, and some of those railway settlements grew into substantial Siberian cities in their own right over the following century. The Soviet era later added further branch lines and a completely separate, more northerly route, the Baikal-Amur Mainline, built primarily in the 1970s and 1980s partly for strategic reasons tied to Cold War-era security concerns near the Chinese border -- a reminder that a railway spanning a continent this size was never purely a transportation project, but also, at every stage of its construction, a statement about which government actually controlled the ground the tracks were laid across.
